Reaction Bonded Silicon Carbide
SCProbond™ R
SCProbond™ R is SCP's reaction-bonded silicon carbide engineered for demanding applications involving sliding abrasion, corrosive environments, high temperatures, and tight dimensional requirements.
Overview
Built for Demanding Applications
SCProbond™ R is formulated for extreme service conditions where high-temperature strength, low porosity, thermal shock resistance, and resistance to sliding abrasion are important.
Its reaction-bonded structure provides near-zero apparent porosity and minimal dimensional change during firing, making SCProbond™ R well suited for precision components and complex geometries where as-fired dimensional stability matters.
SCProbond™ R is particularly suited to applications involving heavy solid-containing slurries, abrasive material flow, corrosive environments, and elevated operating temperatures.

Performance
Why Choose SCProbond™ R for Demanding Components?
Sliding Abrasion Resistance
SCProbond™ R is formulated for demanding sliding-abrasion applications, including service involving heavy solid-containing slurries. Its ASTM C704 volumetric abrasion loss is 0.84 - 1.01 cc.
Near-Zero Porosity
With apparent porosity below 0.1%, SCProbond™ R provides a highly dense structure that can help limit penetration and degradation in demanding environments.
High-Temperature Performance
SCProbond™ R maintains high flexural strength with a maximum safe operating temperature of 2,480 - 2,516°F (1,360 - 1,380°C), dependent upon atmosphere.
Thermal Shock Resistance
The combination of low thermal expansion and high thermal conductivity contributes to good thermal shock resistance, making SCProbond™ R suitable for components exposed to demanding temperature changes.

Why Does Near-Zero Porosity Matter?
SCProbond™ R has an apparent porosity of less than 0.1%, reflecting the dense structure produced by its reaction-bonded manufacturing process. For applications involving corrosive chemicals, abrasive slurries, or continuous material flow, a dense ceramic structure can help limit penetration into the component and support resistance to mechanical and chemical degradation.
Combined with 45 W/m·K thermal conductivity and a relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion, this dense structure contributes to SCProbond™ R's ability to perform in demanding thermal and mechanical environments.
What Does This Mean for Your Application?
When component life depends on resisting both material attack and mechanical wear, porosity can be an important part of the material-selection decision. SCProbond™ R gives engineers a reaction-bonded silicon carbide option with near-zero apparent porosity, high thermal conductivity, and strong abrasion performance.

Pricing Notes
Pricing Is Quoted Per Project
SCProbond™ R pricing depends on part geometry, wall thickness, tolerance requirements, order volume, and whether tooling already exists. Manufacturability, aspect ratio, and overall part dimensions all factor into final cost.
Repeat orders on existing tooling are typically the most cost-effective path since tooling costs are already amortized. Send us your drawing for an accurate, project-specific quote.
