Nitride Bonded
SCProbond™ TN
SCProbond™ TN is SCP's nitride-bonded silicon carbide engineered for components with cross-sections greater than 3/4". Its through-nitriding technology helps maintain a more uniform wear rate throughout thick sections, supporting longer component life and more predictable maintenance in demanding industrial applications.
Overview
Built for Thick-Wall Silicon Carbide Components
Thick sections can present a challenge for conventional nitride-bonded silicon carbide. As section thickness increases, the material's wear characteristics can vary between the surface and the center of the component.
SCProbond™ TN was developed specifically to address this challenge. Its through-nitriding process allows nitriding to extend through thick cross-sections, helping maintain more consistent wear performance throughout the component.
The result is a nitride bonded silicon carbide material designed for severe abrasion, thermal cycling, and applications where predictable wear and extended component life matter across larger cross sections.

The TN Difference
Through-Nitriding for Thick Cross-Sections
More Predictable Wear
Consistent wear behavior throughout thick sections helps make component life easier to anticipate.
Longer Service Life
Uniform wear can help components remain in service longer in demanding abrasive environments.
Better Maintenance Planning
More predictable component performance can help maintenance teams better schedule inspections, replacements, and planned downtime.
Strength Gain When Thermally Cycled
Components exhibit ~10% gain in flexural strength after thermal cycling. As seen in ASTM C1171 testing.

SCProbond™ N vs. SCProbond™ TN
N vs. TN: Choosing the Right Nitride-Bonded Grade
SCProbond™ N and SCProbond™ TN use the same silicon nitride bond system but are engineered for different wall thickness requirements. The primary consideration is whether the nitride reaction can fully penetrate the component section.
SCProbond™ N is designed for standard-wall components from approximately 3/8" to 3/4" thick while SCProbond™ TN is formulated for thick-wall components above 3/4", with nitriding engineered to extend through sections exceeding 4" thick. This helps maintain consistent material properties and wear resistance throughout the component rather than leaving an under-nitrided core.

What does this mean for your application?
For components operating under abrasive or thermally demanding conditions, material selection should account for wall thickness, component geometry, operating temperature, thermal cycling, and expected wear. N and TN provide two nitride-bonded options for different section requirements.
If you are replacing an existing silicon carbide component or experiencing premature wear, SCP can review the part drawing, wall thickness, operating conditions, and current material to help determine whether SCProbond™ N or TN is the better starting point.

Pricing Notes
Pricing Is Quoted Per Project
SCProbond™ TN pricing depends on part geometry, wall thickness, tolerance requirements, order volume, and whether tooling already exists. Manufacturability, aspect ratio, and overall part dimensions all factor into final cost.
Repeat orders on existing tooling are typically the most cost-effective path since tooling costs are already amortized. Send us your drawing for an accurate, project-specific quote.
