Engineering & Manufacturing

From Your Approved Drawing to a Finished Silicon Carbide Component

SCP manages the critical stages of manufacturing custom silicon carbide components—from application and material discussions through pattern making, tooling, casting, firing, finishing, inspection, and delivery. Careful communication and quality checks at every process step result in on-time, in-spec, consistent, repeatable components.

The Full Picture

From Application Discussion to Shipment

Every custom silicon carbide component follows a controlled manufacturing process designed to maintain quality via ISO 9001, consistency, and communication from the initial application discussion through final delivery.

01 · Application & Material Discussion

Understanding Your Application Comes First

Before manufacturing begins, SCP works with your team to understand operating conditions, discuss material options, and review manufacturability to ensure the component is built using the most appropriate SCProbond™ material for the application.

Step 1

Understand the Application

Operating temperature, abrasion, corrosion, impact, existing material performance, production requirements, and expected service life all help inform material and manufacturing considerations.

step 2

Discuss the Appropriate Material

SCProbond™ materials offer different combinations of wear resistance, thermal shock resistance, chemical resistance, and manufacturability. SCP uses the application details to identify the most appropriate material.

step 3

Review for Manufacturability

Once your drawing is received, SCP reviews wall thickness, draft angles, tolerances, aspect ratios, and other details. Recommendations are focused on manufacturability while design ownership remains with your engineering team.

Design Ownership

SCP provides input on material selection and manufacturing considerations. Original component design and engineering responsibility remain with the customer.

02 · Manufacturing Plan

Engineering the Path to Production

Every order begins with a coordinated Manufacturing Plan developed with our production department heads. We review project requirements, define the steps needed for successful manufacturing, identify potential risks, establish quality requirements, and confirm the production schedule. Before manufacturing begins, the team aligns on the plan to ensure the component can be produced successfully and to the customer’s expectations.

FEAUTURED APPROACH

Why Near-Net-Shape Manufacturing Matters

Silicon carbide delivers exceptional hardness and wear resistance—but those same properties make finished components difficult and costly to machine after firing.

SCP's near-net-shape approach casts components as close to their finished geometry as practical, reducing the amount of material that must be removed after firing. For customers, that can translate into lower component costs, greater structural integrity, more design flexibility, and potentially longer service life.

Lower Total Component Cost

Casting closer to the finished geometry reduces the amount of expensive post-fire diamond grinding required; reducing overall cost.

Protect Component Integrity

Every post-fire machining operation creates an opportunity for surface damage or micro-cracking. Minimizing grinding helps preserve the integrity of the silicon carbide component.

Enable Complex Geometries

Custom pattern making and dedicated tooling allow SCP to produce intricate, monolithic silicon carbide components that may be difficult or impractical to manufacture using conventional approaches.

Shorter Lead Time / Higher Yield

Near-net-shape manufacturing reduces lead times as production yields increase and products are manufactured correctly, without the need for addional patterning and tooling work.

03 · In-House Patterning & Tooling

From Component Geometry to Production Tooling

SCP develops patterns and tooling in-house from the customer’s approved drawing, creating the foundation for precise, repeatable production.

Keeping patterning and tooling in-house improves communication, simplifies revisions, and gives SCP greater control over highly customized ceramic components. Tooling is retained for the customer’s program, supporting consistent reproduction and more efficient future orders.

SCP maintains more than 4,000 tooling designs, including plaster and silicone tooling used for ceramic casting.

04 · Production

Controlled Manufacturing from Start to Finish

Every production step is performed using documented procedures developed specifically for ceramic manufacturing. The same teams responsible for engineering reviews remain connected throughout production, improving communication and consistency.

01

Casting

Proprietary SCProbond Mixes are thixotropically or vibro-cast into custom molds.

02

Green Finishing

Products are inspected and mold/seam lines and flashing are removed

03

Drying

Controlled drying removes excess water to prevent steam formation in subsequent firing

04

Firing

Components are fired to develop their final material properties.

05

Final Inspection / Pack
